What is the lawsone dye content?
Lawsone is the orange/red dye naturally present in the henna leaves. It is not an additive. The henna leaves/powder can be laboratory tested to ascertain the lawsone content.

What is body art quality henna and how does it compare with hair quality henna?

Body art quality henna is used for the art of temporary henna tattoo
Body art henna is superior quality and usually more expensive.
Body art henna is more finely sifted than hair quality henna
Body art henna generally has a higher lawsone dye content than hair quality henna.
Body art henna is also excellent for hair colouring, as it makes a smoother paste and gives a stronger colour.

Can I use a chemical dye on hair that has been coloured with henna?
It is best to wait some weeks after using henna before using a chemical dye. Our henna is pure and does not contain metallic salts so there is no risk that your hair will disintegrate if you later use a chemical dye on top of it.

Can I get an allergic reaction to henna and/or indigo?
It is unlikely that you will be allergic to 100% pure organic henna or 100% pure organic indigo but it is not guaranteed as it is possible to be allergic to any natural plant ingredient.

Are there any health risks associated with henna and indigo?
Pure henna and pure indigo have been used for hair colouring, body art tattoos and/or traditional rituals since ancient times and are generally considered to be harmless and even to have health/healing benefits. Henna dyes can be dangerous if they are mixed with chemicals such as PPD, but this is only because of the nature of the added chemicals. The henna powder or indigo powder sold at www.suvarna.co.uk is 100% pure and natural without PPD or any other added chemicals or metallic salts.

However, an exception to this is for people who have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD deficiency). Henna is considered to be dangerous for people with this glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is more common in males than females, and in children of particular ethnic groups. If in doubt check with your doctor. More info on GDPD deficiency: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G6PD_deficiency

Does your henna contain metallic salts?
No, our henna is pure and does not contain metallic salts. Henna containing metallic salts will cause your hair to disintegrate and fall out if you use a chemical dye on top of it.

How long does the colour last?
It depends what kind of henna we are talking about. A good quality pure henna which has been prepared by soaking in something acidic and applied properly will last for a long time. it will fade gradually but some of the colour will last for a long time and may even be permanent.

A henna which has been mixed with a lot of other ingredients may not last as long as the above.

Pure indigo will not last as long as the henna and will fade and wash out quicker. On average indigo will last for 3 to 4 weeks but it will vary on different peoples hair and depends on how often they wash their hair.

Will Henna and Indigo dye beards?
It is sometimes possible to dye beards with henna and indigo but it doesnt always work because beards are much more difficult to dye. We cant guarantee it will work. See here for more info on dyeing beards.
