SERUMS AND FACIAL OILS: WHY AND HOW TO USE THEM Serums and facial oils are a vital part of every skin regime. Whilst cleansing, toning and moisturising are the easy bit to get right (and extremely important) a serum is usually a power-pack of ingredients that work to support the skin. A good organic facial oil / serum can support: · Ageing skin · Dry skin · Sensitive skin · Oily skin · Sore/Allergy prone skin Even ‘normal’ skins can benefit hugely from serums and treatments, but it’s important to choose the right one for you and use it at the optimal time. There is a lot of choice, and confusion about using serums, so we’re here to make it easier. What are serums? Serums are a treatment, usually a very light water-based fluid, that meets a specific skin need in an intensive way. Moisturisers act to stop the skin losing hydration, which makes them thicker and means it’s harder for actives to get through, serums combat that by being lighter. They are used to deliver active ingredients, like botanicals, vitamins and peptides. What are oils? Oils differ from serums in that they are usually a little heavier and, whilst also potentially rich in actives, are focused on rich moisture and soothing to the surface of the skin, feeding the topmost layers and improving texture and hydration. They can also combat free radicals and protect the skin pro-actively from environmental stressors, which lead to inflammation. Can I use both? Yes, absolutely; you can treat with a serum and finish with an oil. This is especially beneficial for mature/dryer skins that need more support. When in my routine do I use my serum and oil? As a rule of thumb, after cleansing and toning, the lighter formulas come first, followed by the heavier ones, so you would use a serum directly after toning, before moisturiser. Your facial oil should come last and is best applied with a facial massage. How do I choose the best facial serums and oils for me? It’s important to choose the best treatment for your face to get great results Oily Skin It may sound counterintuitive, but often oily skin is suffering from a lack of hydration, so good treatments can make a huge difference. Spot on Serum from Odylique is power packed with soothing botanicals and is both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, but not so harsh it will strip the skin. Mature Skin Mature skins need a lot of external support, Many of the signs of ageing can be prevented with a good oil, preferably one rich in anti-oxidants that protect the skin from free radical and pollution based damage. Wild rose is a perfect ingredient for supporting the needs of mature skins, whilst calming the signs of ageing. Dry Skin Dry skins need lots of support to avoid feeling itchy and tight. Frankincense is a beautiful ingredient for nourishing, protecting and soothing dry skins, whilst balancing the mantle of the skin to improve the long-term condition. Normal/Combination Skin Normal skins should use an oil to protect from external damage and to maintain balance. Superfruit Concentrate is the perfect solution to this, brightening and toning the skin too.
