This henna is suitable for body art and for hair colouring. It is the most finely ground henna, mixing to the smoothest paste, without any grittiness.

Henna will generally give brown hair red/brown undertones. Henna will give light coloured hair (grey, white or blonde) a more orange/red tone.

Combining Henna with Indigo to get a reddish-brown, brown, or black shade
Using henna with indigo can create a range of shades from reddish brown to black. The resulting colour depends on the method you use, how long you leave the paste on for, and the proportion of henna and indigo you use. You can find our Certified Organic Indigo by clicking here.

There are 2 ways of using henna with indigo:

Method 1 (double application). First, dye your hair with henna so it goes auburn/red. Next, dye your hair with indigo, and the red will turn to brown. To achieve the desired shade you need to both get the right amount of indigo, and leave the indigo on for the right amount of time. The longer the indigo is left on for the darker it will be. If you leave it on the maximum time it can go black.

Method 2 (single application). Soak the henna over night. In the morning, when you are ready to dye your hair, mix the indigo with water. Thoroughly mix the henna mixture together with the indigo mixture. To get a more red-brown shade use a larger percentage of henna. To get a darker brown, use a larger proportion of indigo. To get a black shade use method 1.

Everyone’s hair is different and will take the colour differently so trial and error may be necessary to get the desired shade.

henna newbie!
Wednesday, 10 April 2013  |  Jill

Hennaed for the first time two weeks ago and I'm now a complete convert! - no itchy head and a much richer colour than I got from my chemical dye which would start to look washed out after about a week or so. I found the mix easy to apply and no mess in the bathroom washing it out - Very very pleased and a fast service from the company too.

I love this product. It gives my hair a lovely rich colour and glossy shine. Plus it can be mixed with other colours to create different tones. I always mix the fast method (warm water, 30 mins soaking time) and still get fab results.

Super fast service
Wednesday, 4 July 2012  |  Sarah

100g was enough to colour my bra-strap-length hair twice over. I mixed the henna with a 50:50 mix of water and lemon juice and left it overnight. Applied (no drips) and left for three hours. Rinsed forever (!!) and dried. Did have a red scalp until I re-washed three days later, but that always happens!! Hair colour is great! I ordered the henna on a Friday and it arrived on Saturday. Excellent service.

Factors effecting the colour of a natural hair dye
Different hair structure and chemistry such as acidity levels in your hair effect the resulting colour.  For example some peoples hair goes coppery more easily than others. So one particular colour is not the same on everyone.

Because natural hair dyes are semi-transparent the colour you have underneath is going a show through to some extent. For example if your hair is bright red and you apply a brown colour on top of it - some of the red is still going to show through on the first application. Or if your hair is white or blonde and you put a dark colour on top of it may not immediately go dark. If you have stripes of grey the grey may still be a lighter colour. (Also grey hair has a unique structure which renders the colour differently to your none grey hair). Colouring your hair 2 or 3 times allowing at least 12 hours between each application will strengthen the colour.

Strand testing
It is particularly important to do a strand test before using a natural hair dye for the first time because all natural hair dyes are more unpredictable that chemical dyes. A strand test is a way of testing the colour on on a small section of your hair before you put it all over your hair.

Can you lighten hair with a natural hair dye?
It is not possible to lighten your hair with natural hair dyes as this requires peroxide.  Sometimes rinsing with lemon juice can have a temporary lightening effect.

Which is the best natural hair dye?
This depends on your hair and what effect you are looking for.  The best natural hair dye for one person will not be the best one for an other person.

Which is your best selling hair dye?
Our best selling natural hair dye is the Logona Hair Colour Cream probably because it is very easy to use but the colour range is quite limited so it would not suit everyone.  The 2nd best seller is the Logona Herbal Hair Colour Powders.

Do you have a certified organic hair dye?
Its Pure Organics Henna and Indigo Powder is certified organic and can be used together to acheive, red, auburn, medium brown to black shades..  The Palette by Nature hair dye contains 100% natural and 50% organic ingredients. The Logona Hair dye contains some organic ingredients including certified organic henna, and is certified natural by the BDIH which is similar to organic certification but does not require as high a proportion of certified organic ingredients.

Can a natural hair dye damage your hair?
No, a natural hair dye will not damage your hair. A natural hair dye works by coating your hair - it does not penetrate and damage the hair structure. The natural ingredients work as a conditioner for your hair. You can use these 100% natural hair dyes as often as you like without any danger of damaging your hair or your body.   It is chemical hair dyes containing nasty ingredients such as PPD and ammonia that really damage your hair.

Are they really natural?
Every natural hair dye we sell at suvarna is 100% natural. Beware of the many so called natural hair dyes on the market which are advertised as natural but when you look at the ingredients they have a lot of chemicals in them mixed with natural ingredients. Some of them only have a small percentage of natural ingredients.

Which is the most potent 100% natural hair dye?

The method of dyeing your hair with pure henna paste with nothing else added, and then afterwards dyeing it will pure indigo paste with nothing else added can give very strong results. It is also more powerful to use Henna and Indigo Powder in this way rather than mixing it together with other plants and natural ingredients. It is also important to source good quality Henna and Indigo Powder as pure quality will not give good results.

Many people have found the Palette by Nature hair dye very potent and have achieved a good coverage of grey to a dark colour with this natural hair dye. However it is a very individual thing and Palette by Nature does not work well for everyone. This natural hair dye may still require several applications to get a good grey coverage.

Some people have found that the Aubrey Organics Dark Brown natural hair dye gives a good dark colour on their grey hair. But again it does not work for everyone.

If you have the type of hair which is very porous your hair will absorb the colour of a natural hair dye more easily giving a more intense or dark colour. This is another reason for doing a strand test before applying the natural hair dye all over your hair in case the colour is too dark for you.

However most 100% natural hair dyes which are blends of many different ingredients such as Logona do not tend to give a very intense colour.  Usually this type of natural hair dye will only go one step up from the colour you had before. So you are not likely to be shocked at the intensity of colour of a natural hair dye!
